One major cause of AKI is ischemic–reperfusion injury (IRI), which happens when blood supply returns to the kidney after a period of low oxygen. This triggers damage, including inflammation, oxidative stress and scarring, which can lead to long-term kidney problems.
What’s more, Chronic kidney disease (CKD), which can lead to kidney failure, is estimated to affect more than 10 per cent of the population. When the kidneys are damaged — whether from surgery, infections, or other factors — their ability to heal depends on certain cells in the kidney. If these cells fail to recover properly, scarring (fibrosis) occurs, often requiring dialysis or a transplant.
There are measures being looked into to improve kidney health and new research has shown some exciting developments.
Does Omega 3 Improve Kidney Function?
Omega-3 from seafood may help lower the risk of CKD and slow kidney decline. A study found that people with higher seafood omega-3 levels had an 8 per cent lower risk of CKD, with three specific omega-3s — EPA, DHA and DPA — linked to this benefit.
Another study examined data from nine clinical trials (444 participants) to determine the effects of omega-3 fatty acids on kidney health. The results suggest that omega-3 supplements may help reduce protein in the urine (proteinuria) and lower the risk of end-stage kidney disease (ESRD), but they did not significantly impact creatinine clearance (CCR) or estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), which are common measures of kidney function.
Previous studies had mixed results on omega-3’s benefits for kidney disease, with some showing no clear effect and others suggesting a reduction in proteinuria. This study, however, found stronger evidence that omega-3s help with proteinuria, possibly by improving blood pressure control, a key factor in kidney disease progression.
This is the reason recent research into LPC omega-3 is so exciting, because studies have shown it may improve kidney repair.

LPC Omega 3 and Kidney Regeneration
As mentioned above, studies show that AKI disrupts the balance of lipids (fats) in kidney cell membranes, affecting their structure and function.
A key player in kidney lipid balance is a protein called Mfsd2a. This transporter helps move a type of fat called lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC), which is rich in omega-3 fatty acids like DHA, into cells. LPCs play a role in maintaining and repairing cell membranes. Previously, Mfsd2a was known for its role in brain development, but researchers have now found that it is also active in the kidney.
A study found that Mfsd2a is important for kidney recovery after IRI. In experiments with mice, those with reduced Mfsd2a levels struggled to recover from kidney injury, but supplementing them with LPC-DHA helped restore kidney function and repair damaged membranes. This suggests that boosting LPC-DHA levels could be a potential treatment for AKI.
Research has also linked Mfsd2a to diabetic kidney disease, suggesting that low Mfsd2a levels or a lack of LPC-DHA in the blood might contribute to kidney damage in other conditions. Since both AKI and diabetic kidney disease share common damage pathways, LPC-DHA supplementation could be beneficial in multiple kidney disorders.
These findings suggest that LPC-DHA supplementation could help protect kidney function after injuries like surgery or infections. It may also benefit kidney transplant patients by improving donor organ recovery.
