Our body uses something called NMN, or nicotinamide mononucleotide, to create a compound called nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, otherwise known as NAD+. This is found in every cell and is needed for energy metabolism, gene expression and DNA repair. NAD+ may also help prevent the shortening of our telomeres, with their shortening possibly contributing to the aging process.

As we age, our NAD+ levels decline, and it’s been suggested that supplementing with NMN can increase our NAD+ levels to help with healthy aging and longevity. What are some NMN side effects?

There are currently no known major side effects unless they contain other ingredients. Some mild side effects may include nausea, gas and abdominal pain. Since NMN may lower blood pressure, speak with your doctor or monitor your blood pressure when taking NMN with medications that lower blood pressure. Make sure your NMN is stored in a cool environment, such as your fridge. When it’s warm or hot, it can degrade and poison your body.

Occasionally, you may notice signals from your body for you to take a short break from taking NMN supplements, such as poor sleep quality or memory lapses. If you’re experiencing these signs, consider stopping taking NMN for a week to allow your body a rest period before taking it again.

There are currently no known interactions between NMN and medications, as long as the NMN you’re taking is pure. What is the optimal NMN dosage?

So, how much NMN should I take? Take between 250mg and 1200mg per day of NMN powder. For oral supplementation, one study found that taking 100mg to 500mg of NMN was safe and effective. Since there is no official recommended dosage of NMN, these studies give those taking the supplement a guide for how much NMN for anti-aging effects.

How to take NMN?

NMN — How Long to See Results?

  • 1 hour — NMN enters our cells: It’s been found that NMN is absorbed from our gut and into our bloodstream within minutes. Within 10 to 30 minutes, it’s then moved into our tissue, where it’s then immediately used for NAD+ production.
  • 5 hours — NAD+ levels rise: Within the first few hours, there are higher levels of NAD+ metabolites in our blood plasma, which then continue to rise steadily, suggesting it’s being used.
  • 3 days —Improved mitochondrial health and boosted cell energy production: As our NAD+ is rising, this is benefitting the mitochondria, where cellular energy, such as through mitochondrial replication.
  • 30 days —NAD+ levels are increased by 40 per cent: With 250mg per day of NMN supplementation, a study showed that healthy adults had 40 per cent higher NAD+ levels in the blood.
  • 6 weeks —Muscle benefits: Another study found that with 250mg of NMN each day, healthy older men showed partly improved muscle strength and performance, which is great since NAD+ depletes with age.
  • 8 weeks —Skin benefits: 300mg of NMN per day in healthy postmenopausal women was found to decrease AGEs (advanced glycation end products), which are markers of skin aging, in the skin.
  • 10 weeks —Insulin benefits: At 250mg of NMN per day, higher NMN metabolites are in our skeletal muscle tissue, suggesting our muscles are using more NAD+, and the NMN may be supporting healthy insulin sensitivity in our skeletal muscle.
  • 3 months —Improved gait speed: Taking 250mg of NMN each day was found to improve gait speed, or walking speed, in healthy, older men.
  • 6 months —Healthy aging: Consistency is key with many supplements, including NMN, which was found in one clinical study that showed our NAD+ levels return to pre-supplementation levels after four weeks of stopping NMN supplementation.
