How NMN Can Benefit You for Longevity

NMN. Nicotinamide mononucleotide. We’ve written many articles about this compound, along with NMN benefits on longevity and healthy aging, so you’ve probably heard about it before.

If not, we wanted to give you a refresher on how this natural compound may help you in your biohacking journey to tailor your supplement journey to your health goals. We’ve also included some recent FAQs that might pique your interest, so jump there now to see our responses:

Our body uses something called NMN, or nicotinamide mononucleotide, to create a compound called nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, otherwise known as NAD+. This is found in every cell and is needed for energy metabolism, gene expression and DNA repair. NAD+ may also help prevent the shortening of our telomeres, with their shortening possibly contributing to the aging process.

As we age, our NAD+ levels decline, and it’s been suggested that supplementing with NMN can increase our NAD+ levels to help with healthy aging and longevity. Lower NAD+ levels may also be linked to faster physical decline and the start of age-related diseases, like Alzheimer’s disease. There are actually other precursors to NAD+ too, like niacin and NR, but NMN is a direct precursor to NAD+ and can improve our NAD+ levels more efficiently.

NMN for Longevity

To help with healthy aging and improved health span, taking NMN may help. But how does it do this and what are some benefits of NMN in your everyday life?

Here’s an overview of the various benefits of NMN for longevity and health span purposes:

  • Improve energy levels: If you’re looking for how to increase energy levels, NMN can help as it can boost NAD+ levels, which is needed for cellular energy production and mitochondrial function. NAD+ activates sirtuins, such as the SIRT1 gene, which helps control cell death, turn on and off anti-aging genes and helps repair our DNA.
  • Boost metabolism: NMN may help with weight loss by improving our metabolism, reducing fat build-up, and improving glucose tolerance as well as insulin sensitivity. Due to activating sirtuins, it also helps regulate our metabolism. What’s more, it also NAD+ also helps produce ATP, or adenosine trisphosphate, which boosts energy metabolism.
  • Support hormone function: NMN has shown benefits in helping females reproduce for longer, possibly even reversing menopause. Due to its effects on our hormones, NMN can also help regulate our sleep.
  • Neuroprotection: NMN may also improve cognitive function, such as memory and focus, providing neuroprotection benefits.
  • Help lower blood pressure: May improve cardiovascular health, reduce blood cholesterol, improve blood pressure and reduce inflammation, all effects of obesity, meaning it’s a potential supplement for both weight loss and diabetes.
  • Help hair growth: NMN has been found to reverse hair follicle atrophy, hair thinning and hair sparsity. It may also help hair growth by reducing inflammation and increasing blood flow.
  • Improve exercise performance and endurance: Due to NMN’s benefits on energy levels by raising NAD+ levels, this can lead to improved exercise performance, endurance and overall vitality.
  • Improve longevity: A study found that both mice and a small group of people ages 45 to 60 showed significantly lengthened telomere length when taking NMN supplements.

All About NMN Supplements

What are some NMN side effects?

There are currently no known major side effects unless they contain other ingredients. Some mild side effects may include nausea, gas and abdominal pain. Since NMN may lower blood pressure, speak with your doctor or monitor your blood pressure when taking NMN with medications that lower blood pressure. Make sure your NMN is stored in a cool environment, such as your fridge. When it’s warm or hot, it can degrade and poison your body.

Occasionally, you may notice signals from your body for you to take a short break from taking NMN supplements, such as poor sleep quality or memory lapses. If you’re experiencing these signs, consider stopping taking NMN for a week to allow your body a rest period before taking it again.

There are currently no known interactions between NMN and medications, as long as the NMN you’re taking is pure. Check the ingredients of the specific supplement you’re taking, as if it includes herbs, these may interact with common medications. Xandro Lab’s Pure NMN Powder, for example, has no added ingredients.

What is the optimal NMN dosage?

So, how much NMN should I take? Take between 250mg and 1200mg per day of NMN powder. For oral supplementation, one study found that taking 100mg to 500mg of NMN was safe and effective. Since there is no official recommended dosage of NMN, these studies give those taking the supplement a guide for how much NMN for anti-aging effects.

How to take NMN?

Follow the manufacturer’s directions for specific use. For Xandro Lab’s Pure NMN Capsules, take one capsule each day with food, in the morning or afternoon to help with energy. For Xandro Lab’s Pure NMN Powder, start with 350mg or half a scoop a day, and gradually increase this as your body gets used to it, taking once or twice a day. Take it with a meal in the morning with breakfast, but once your body is used to it — about a few weeks — take it about an hour before breakfast on an empty stomach or dissolve it directly under your tongue for better absorption.

NMN — How Long to See Results?

NMN before and after supplementation results should be tracked with a supplement journal to help track any changes happening inside your body and to see how long it takes for you. Generally, though, it takes at least two to three weeks to see results from NMN.

Keep in mind that everyone will experience the effects of NMN differently, especially since it takes time for NMN to build up in the body and improve NAD+ levels. Make sure to take NMN supplements consistently on a daily basis to allow this to happen, with effects often noticed within a few weeks to a month or two to possibly even six months.

Studies have shown that in terms of physical performance, older men who took 250mg of NMN per day for 12 weeks showed improved mobility and muscle function, while younger athletes experienced improved muscle strength, endurance and physical performance after 6 weeks.

What’s interesting, though, is that, in our bodies, NMN starts to work 15 minutes after ingesting. Let’s break this down:

  • 1 hour — NMN enters our cells: It’s been found that NMN is absorbed from our gut and into our bloodstream within minutes. Within 10 to 30 minutes, it’s then moved into our tissue, where it’s then immediately used for NAD+ production.
  • 5 hours — NAD+ levels rise: Within the first few hours, there are higher levels of NAD+ metabolites in our blood plasma, which then continue to rise steadily, suggesting it’s being used.
  • 3 days —Improved mitochondrial health and boosted cell energy production: As our NAD+ is rising, this is benefitting the mitochondria, where cellular energy, such as through mitochondrial replication.
  • 30 days —NAD+ levels are increased by 40 per cent: With 250mg per day of NMN supplementation, a study showed that healthy adults had 40 per cent higher NAD+ levels in the blood.
  • 6 weeks —Muscle benefits: Another study found that with 250mg of NMN each day, healthy older men showed partly improved muscle strength and performance, which is great since NAD+ depletes with age.
  • 8 weeks —Skin benefits: 300mg of NMN per day in healthy postmenopausal women was found to decrease AGEs (advanced glycation end products), which are markers of skin aging, in the skin.
  • 10 weeks —Insulin benefits: At 250mg of NMN per day, higher NMN metabolites are in our skeletal muscle tissue, suggesting our muscles are using more NAD+, and the NMN may be supporting healthy insulin sensitivity in our skeletal muscle.
  • 3 months —Improved gait speed: Taking 250mg of NMN each day was found to improve gait speed, or walking speed, in healthy, older men.
  • 6 months —Healthy aging: Consistency is key with many supplements, including NMN, which was found in one clinical study that showed our NAD+ levels return to pre-supplementation levels after four weeks of stopping NMN supplementation.

Does NMN work without resveratrol?

Yes, NMN works regardless of whether you take resveratrol as it’s a precursor to NAD+, however, trans-resveratrol (the highly absorbable form of resveratrol) is a supplement that’s great to take with NMN as they are both used for NAD+ production. Dr. David Sinclair and his team found one particular way they work well together: they found that resveratrol is needed to activate the sirtuin genes, which protect our DNA, and then NMN fuels these sirtuins.

Can NMN increase longevity?

NMN, or Nicotinamide Mononucleotide, offers many longevity benefits. It increases energy levels by boosting NAD+ levels, essential for cellular energy production, and helps with weight loss by improving metabolism and glucose tolerance. It also supports hormonal balance, improves cognitive function and memory, and may help cardiovascular health by lowering blood cholesterol and improving blood pressure. Directly, NMN may contribute to longevity by potentially lengthening telomeres. Read more above.

Why did the FDA ban NMN?

NMN is currently banned in some countries, including the US, the EU and China. In the US, this is because it was labelled as a supplement, not because it had any adverse effects, where, because it’s currently being tested as a potential drug, it cannot be labelled as a supplement. Read more about that here.

Will NMN make me look younger?

NMN is a supplement for longevity and as mentioned above, starts working in our bodies within 15 minutes of ingestion. It’s not necessarily a supplement you would take to look younger, though, rather, is one to take to help you feel younger due to its long-term benefits on your overall health and longevity, such as brain health, metabolism, cardiovascular health and cell health. It may indirectly improve skin health by reducing inflammation, improving blood flow and preventing cell death. More studies on this topic are underway, so keep an eye out for future research!
